Things Learned at 37 Signals

Posted by Eric on September 18, 2008  |   No Comments »

Just started reading through an excerpt from a talk given by Jason Fried  (founder and partner at 37Signals).  In case you don’t know, 37signals is the web software company that has made some incredible web applications like: basecamp, highrise, ta-da list, writeboard – really like a ton of great stuff.

They’ve talked about how they did it and how they did it different than most other companies.

Here’s a link to the article:

A few of the points he makes:
  1. Interruption is the enemy of productivity
  2. Always be Questioning
  3. Work less (my favorite)
He also has a bunch of other great options…

Thoughts on a new web-site

As I’m sure you’ve already noticed, I have been working on re-designing this site. Rather than just making it a better looking site, I thought I would go ahead and make it a project, a goal.

So, I decided to use WordPress – the defacto blogging software – as my entire web management system (usually called a Content Management System or CMS).

I’ve worked with several true CMS systems in the past – things like Joomla, Mambo, Drupal and mod-X). But all these systems seemed to be confusing and non-intuitive to me. And, if I seem to get confused by them, then end users, my clients will definately as well.

So, I started off on this project to see what it would look like to use WordPress – which meets my two goals: free and easy – as my CMS. As you can see, I’m getting a lot done. I’ll post back soon with my thoughts…
